NKR is electing its new President

 The fifth presidential elections are underway Thursday at the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic (NKR). All 273 polling stations in the country, and one polling station in NKR’s Permanent Representation in Armenia, have opened their doors at 8am. 

The total number of eligible voters is 98,909.

The elections are followed by around 80 observers from numerous countries and by an official delegation from Armenia.

A press center is set up at the Palace of Culture of NKR capital, Stepanakert.

Three non-party affiliate candidates are running in the NKR presidential elections. They are: Incumbent NKR President Bako Sahakyan, Deputy Director Arkadi Soghomonyan of Academic Activities at the NKR capital Stepanakert Branch of State Agrarian University of Armenia, and NKR National Assembly MP Vitali Balasanyan.

To note, NKR’s previous presidential elections were held on July 19, 2007, and serving President Bako Sahakyan was elected Head of State. According to official figures, he had received 85.12 percent of the total votes.
